Our Cemeteries

The United Synagogue Burial Society maintains twenty cemeteries. Many are heritage cemeteries where burials no longer take place but which we preserve on behalf of the Jewish community. Our cemeteries that are permanently open are Bushey Old, Bushey New, Waltham Abbey, Willesden and East Ham Cemetery. Visiting Cemeteries on Tisha B’Av (Thursday 23rd July 2026)

On Tisha B’Av, Thursday 23 July 2026, several historic Jewish (“Heritage”) cemeteries maintained by the United Synagogue Burial Society will be open to visitors without needing a prior appointment, even though some of these cemeteries are normally accessible only by arrangement.

Cemeteries such as Alderney Road, Brady Street and Lauriston Road are historic Jewish burial grounds that are normally visited by prior appointment only.

The following Heritage cemeteries will be open for visits on Tisha B’Av without the need for a prior appointment:

  • Please take care while walking, as pathways and areas  between memorials can be narrow and may be uneven.
  • Be mindful that surfaces can sometimes be slippery.
  • Please do not use grave stones for support.
  • Please watch out for natural features like low-hanging branches and loose stones, and be prepared for changing weather conditions.
  • By entering the grounds of any United Synagogue cemetery or United Synagogue maintained cemetery, you acknowledge these conditions and accept personal responsibility for your own safety during your visit.

This is the oldest Ashkenazi Cemetery in the United Kingdom. Also known as The Great Synagogue Burial Ground, this cemetery opened in 1697 which was extended in 1749 and was closed in 1852.

Famous people buried in the cemetery include:
Aaron Hart 1709 – 1756 – 1st Chief Rabbi of England
David Tevele Schiff 1765 -1791 2nd Chief Rabbi of England
Rabbi Hayim Samuel Jacob De Falk 1708 – 1782 – Baal Shem of London

This is a beautiful small walled cemetery set to the side of a municipal multi-cultural cemetery in the county of Hampshire along Redan Road. A picturesque cemetery, that has an abundance of flowering trees and shrubs in and around the memorials. The centre has a large tomb dedicated to the “Cohen family” which has an unusual style to it. There are three commonwealth war graves and an array of varied memorials in differing stone and character.

Formally known as Globe Fields, this area was purchased in 1810 by the Maiden Lane Synagogue. The first burial took place in 1811. The cemetery was closed for burials in 1907.

Hyman Hurwitz 1770 – 1844 Professor of Hebrew at London University, friend of Coleridge
Nathan Meyer Rothschild 1777 – 1836 Banker
Miriam Levy 1801 – 1850 Welfare Worker, opened up first kitchen for the poor in Whitechapel

Cohanim should not drive along Sandy Lane to access either Bushey Old or Bushey New cemeteries because of overhanging trees. Please access these sites by driving along Little Bushey Lane.

Please note: there are now two cemeteries operating at Bushey, Bushey ‘Old’ Cemetery and Bushey ‘New’ Cemetery, both of which are still active for funerals, stonesettings and visiting. Please check carefully which cemetery you require.

Bushey ‘Old’ Cemetery is at Little Bushey Lane, Bushey, Hertfordshire, WD23 3TP and Bushey ‘New’ Cemetery is 400m down the road at Little Bushey Lane, Bushey, Hertfordshire, WD23 3FF.

Please do not park on the kerb anywhere on Little Bushey Lane, even if you see other cars doing it. You may get a parking ticket and it causes access problems for people in wheelchairs and local families with children who cannot use the pavement when it is blocked by cars.

Please park in one of our two large car parks at either Bushey New Cemetery or Bushey Old Cemetery. Once parked, you can reach the other cemetery by foot in just 5-6 minutes. Please ask a member of staff if you need assistance.

Situated a little to the North of Royal Gate East, Victoria Park, Hackney. The cemetery opened in 1788 (purchased by the Hambro Synagogue) and closed in 1886 (By Order in Council). The first burial at this cemetery dates back to Monday 11th February 1788.

Opened in 1896, known as the “Trade Unionists Cemetery”. Past secretaries of the cigars union and costomongers union are buried in the cemetery. On 6th May 2003 386 tombstones were vandalised.

Famous people buried in the cemetery include the following:

Sir John De Villiers – Knighted by the British Government for his work in connection with the Venezuelan-Surinam frontier negotiations also the librarian and deputy keeper of the printed books and head of the Map Room at the British Museum.

Henry Osprovat – Illustrator, caricaturist, draughtsman and occasional portrait painter. Illustrated Shakespeare, Matthew Arnold and Browning 1899–1902. Engaged on a series of caricatures of ‘Stars of the Music Hall Stage’ when he died on 2 January 1909. Memorial exhibition at the Baillie Gallery 1909.

West Ham Cemetery was opened in 1857, and was the burial ground of the Great and New Synagogue. At the north end of the cemetery some of the paths were excavated in 1960 to reinter remains moved from the cemetery in Hoxton. The most prominent monument in the cemetery is the Mausoleum designed by Sir Matthew Digby Wyatt, architect of the India Office in Whitehall, for Evelina Rothschild who died in childbirth in 1866.

Famous people buried in the cemetery include the following:
Rabbi Susman Cohen – Died 1907 – Dayan of the United Synagogue, 1893 – 1906
David Salomons – Died 1873 – First Jewish Lord Mayor of London & also Liberal Member of Parliament for Greenwich.
Sir Benjamin Phillips – Died 1889 – Lord Mayor of London

Willesden Cemetery is one of London’s most prestigious Jewish Cemeteries. It was opened in 1873.

Weed growth in our cemeteries

All cemeteries have weed growth in them. This is due to restrictions concerning certain weed killers that have been introduced via Europe but have been adopted into the UK over the last few years.

We are now only permitted to use a systemic weed killer which has to be sprayed onto a growing weed. Once sprayed, it will slowly be absorbed and eventually kill the weed.

We will endeavour to clear the sections that have weed growth by hand, but this is a very large task. The sprayed weeds will go brown, die and shrivel up into nothing. We use a reputable company to carry out this important process. If you have a particular area that you need “hand picking” please inform the cemeteries maintenance dept. on 020 8950 7767 option 2.
